Exclusive interview with Appleblim

Some musicians only rely on their sound to express themselves, but it gets even better when the word gun is on the table, and that's what we got from Laurent Osborne (aka Appleblim) on this exclusive interview previous to his visit for the first Green Submarine party.

Green Submarine: -Even having access to information and news from all over the world, it’s still more interesting to hear the first-person point of view. So tell us, what's the dubstep scene like nowadays in London?

Appleblim: -To be honest I really don’t know. I live in Bristol, and my life centres around really a few places there where I make music and hang out and live normal life! I don’t get a chance to rave in London much anymore as I am working so often as a DJ on the weekends. I still love it up there but I find it hard to keep up with it when there’s so much happening all around me in Bristol in my day to day music making life. I hope to check out some more raves up there soon. I used to play FWD>> and DMZ fairly regularly (and before that I went as a raver, all the time).
But I haven’t for years now really, so don’t know what the vibe is like. I do hear that there is a ton of energy up there though, and I like what I see and hear happening at places like Boiler Room, who seem to be nurturing all different kinds of music through their night and website (http://boilerroom.tv/)

GS: -Do you  consider to be part of an evolution in sound the mix of 4x4 styles like techno and house with rhythms such as dubstep?

AP: -It’s all evolution, to state the obvious: jungle incorporated sped up hip hop breaks, hip hop breaks came from funk, funk came from jazz soul and R&B, those genres came out of Africa ultimately etc etc. All music bleeds into everything around it, you can't control it and that's why I love it. When jungle was still called jungle techno, the 4x4 fitted perfectly with that sound. In America the big sound is almost like dubstep Metal, it is what it is, you can't halt evolution!

GS: -Dubstep is currently getting more abstract and rebuilding itself maybe with more twisted rythmics, there's also people that say dubstep per se is already dead in London, would you agree with this?

AP: -No music ever really dies I think, people said Grime was dead but if you go out and look there is still tons going on, things just creep underground again when the media flashlight has gone somewhere else. There is ALWAYS great music and scenes to be found, and if you can't find them for a bit, then maybe start one if you can!

GS: -You've studied music technology and mentioned that this was the fact that changed your life after finishing a phase with your band Monsoon Bassoon, how did this new approach with music changed your point of view?

AP: -It allowed me the space and time to concentrate on electronic music making, and it changed my life in terms of new places, new friends, new experiences which is just what I needed at the time.

GS: -Would you play in or form a band again?

AP: -Yes definitely. I am trying to find the right people. Al Tourettes is an amazing drummer, so I think we will jam soon. I really would like to form a group from the talent in Bristol, it's just so different to what i've been doing in terms of rehearsal, organising people, it's hectic trying to get that stuff together! You need a unified effort.
 

GS: -What's the criteria you are using to select music to release on Apple Pips?

AP: -Basically just good tracks that I think are experimental but dancefloor-ready! At the moment it's a lot of stuff from people that inspire me from Bristol, people I make music with and live around, but that may change, it's really just what takes my fancy at a certain time

GS: -Which artists have caught your attention lately?

AP: -So many: Objekt, Andy Mac, Pulsar, Phat Chex, New Bass Clef material is stunning!

GS: -What do you expect from your first visit to Latin America?

AP: -Wow, I really don't know! I am just very thankful to be able to visit, as I never thought I would be able to in my life! So I'm very lucky to be able to travel. Hopefully I can spread some great music to you guys over there.

GS: -Thanks for everything, as a last question we'd like to know what's next on Apple Pips and if you're working on new Appleblim productions.

AP: -Next up is Arkist, two AMAZING trax that have been smashing it recently, Rendezvous and Fill Your Coffee, you can find him on Soundcloud, that should be out in a month or so. Then it’s October and Borai, two Bristol based jacking and deep house masters! Very excited. Then some remixes from me and Al Tourettes for Axel Boman for Hypercolour, then some stuff for Skudge and Raudive perhaps.

Algunos músicos se valen solo de su sonido para expresarse, pero qué bueno que es cuando existe el ingrediente extra de la palabra, eso es lo que nos da Laurent Osborne (aka Appleblim) en esta entrevista exclusiva previa a su visita para la primera fiesta Green Submarine. 

Green Submarine: -Aún teniendo acceso a información y noticias de todo el mundo resulta más interesante escuchar perspectivas en primera persona. Así que contanos, ¿Cómo se encuentra la escena dubstep en Londres actualmente?

Appleblim: -Para ser honesto, realmente no lo sé. Vivo en Bristol, y mi vida transcurre alrededor de pocos lugares allí, donde hago música, salgo por ahí y vivo una vida normal! No tengo la oportunidad de ir de clubbing en Londres ya que estoy trabajando mucho como DJ los fines de semana. Aún amo lo que sucede allí pero resulta difícil mantenerse al tanto habiendo tantas cosas sucediendo en mi vida de músico en Bristol. Espero poder ir a algunas fiestas nuevamente pronto, solía  tocar en FWD>> y DMZ regularmente, y antes que eso iba como raver todo el tiempo. Pero hace años que no regreso, así que no sé cómo será la vibra hoy en día, aunque me cuentan que aún hay toneladas de energía. Y me gusta lo que veo y escucho en lugares como Boiler Room, quienes al parecer están criando todo tipo de música a través de sus noches y en su página web (http://boilerroom.tv/).


GS: -¿Considerás que las mixturas que se están dando entre estilos 4x4 como Techno y House con rítmicas como el Dubstep corresponden a una evolución en el sonido?

AP: -Todo es evolución, yendo a lo evidente: la música Jungle incorporó breaks hiphoperos acelerados, esos breaks venían del Funk, que a su vez tenía orígenes en el Jazz, Soul y R&B, todos estos géneros tienen raíces africanas, y así podría seguir. Toda la música deja rastro en lo que la rodea, no hay modo de controlarlo y es por eso que lo amo. Cuando el Jungle se conocía como Jungla Techno, la rítmica 4x4 combinaba perfecto en su sonido. En América el gran sonido es casi como Metal Dubstep, es lo que es, ¡no puedes detener la evolución!

GS: -Actualmente el Dubstep se está tornando más abstracto y reconstruyéndose con cosas como rítmicas más retorcidas, e inclusive hay gente que dice que el dubstep en sí mismo ya está muerto en Londres, ¿Estás de acuerdo con esto?

AP: -Creo que la música nunca muere realmente, la gente también decía que el Grime ha perecido, pero si vas y buscás aún hay un montón de nuevas cosas emergiendo. Los géneros se arrastran nuevamente al under cuando los flashes de los medios ya viraron hacia otro lugar. SIEMPRE hay excelente música y escenas por descubrir, y si en algún período no puedes encontrarla, tal vez sea hora de empezar una.

GS: -Estudiaste tecnología musical y has mencionado que fue el hecho que cambió tu vida luego de terminar una etapa con tu banda Monsoon Bassoon, ¿Cómo fue que este nuevo acercamiento a la música cambió tu punto de vista?

AP: -Permitiéndome el lugar y tiempo para concentrarme en producción de música electrónica, y cambiando mi vida en términos de nuevos lugares, amigos y experiencias que era justo lo que necesitaba en ese momento.

GS: -¿Te gustaría volver a formar una banda?

AP: -Definitivamente, estoy tratando de encontrar las personas indicadas. Al Tourettes es un increíble baterista, así que pienso que pronto vamos a jamear juntos. Formaría un grupo con la gente talentosa que hay en Bristol. Es algo muy diferente a lo que vengo haciendo en cuanto a los ensayos, organizar gente, ¡es complicado poder coordinar esas cosas! Se necesita un esfuerzo grupal.

GS: -¿Cuál es el criterio que usas para seleccionar la música de Apple Pips?

AP: -Básicamente buenos tracks, que considero experimentales pero dancefloor. Al momento la mayoría del material es de artistas de Bristol que me inspiran, gente con la que hago música y tengo a mi alrededor, pero eso tal vez cambie, solo depende de dónde vaya mi imaginación en determinado momento.

GS: -¿Qué artistas te llamaron la atención últimamente?

AP: -Un montón: Objekt, Andy Mac, Pulsar, Phat Chrx, y el nuevo trabajo de Bass Clef que es alucinante.

GS: -¿Qué esperás de tu primer visita a la Argentina?

AP: -Realmente no lo sé, estoy muy agradecido de que me hayan tenido en cuenta para ir, pensé que nunca en la vida se me iba a poder dar! Me siento muy afortunado de poder realizar esta gira. Espero poder mostrarles muy buena música.

GS: -Gracias por todo, como última pregunta querríamos saber qué es lo que se viene en tu sello Apple Pips, y si escucharemos nuevas producciones de Appleblim próximamente.

AP: -Lo siguiente en Apple Pips es de Arkist, dos tracks increíbles que la estuvieron rompiendo últimamente: Rendezvous y Fill Your Coffe, podés encontrarlos en Soundcloud, esto debería ver la luz en un mes. Luego llegan October y Borai, dos maestros del deep house basados en Bristol, estoy muy emocionado con esto. Más adelante algunos remixes de Al Tourettes y míos para Axel Boman a través de Hypercolour, y finalmente algún material para Skudge y probablemente Raudive también.

Who is Appleblim?

Y si, finalmente lo develamos, el primer mega invitado internacional de las fiestas Green Submarine, es ni más ni menos que Appleblim.
